Education & Training

Our Approach to Education & Training

Our lab emphasizes two goals in education and training.

1. We will require students to develop the following skills, scientific thinking, handling the data carefully, and courage of facing to disease and disaster without hesitation—they are need no matter what field they pursue after graduation. Regarding the ability to think scientifically, they will learn to critically examine texts and to obtain a fundamental understanding of epidemiology, disaster public health, genomes, and artificial intelligence.
2. To ensure our students obtain the necessary skills and knowledge suiting their individual aspirations and characteristics.

Through fulfilling these two goals, our aim is to develop our students so they become highly specialized professionals who can flourish in their chosen field, whether it be academic research or profession. For further details, please refer to our Research Areas & Objectives.

Admissions

○Disaster Public Health (Master of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Master of Public Health)

https://irides.tohoku.ac.jp/eng/organization/medical/publichealth.html
This field contributes to improving the health of local residents by conducting long-term health surveys and providing preemptive medical care so that the root causes of problems—a rise in diseases following a large-scale disaster—are addressed.
This field is a department of the International Research Institute of Disaster Science. Applicants need to pass the entrance examination of Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. Students will take classes and seminars mainly at the Seiryo Campus.

○Molecular Epidemiology (Master of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences)

https://www.med.tohoku.ac.jp/english/about/laboratory/102.html
While epidemiology is the science of researching the distribution and causes of disease in human populations, molecular epidemiology goes one step further by using the latest molecular biological methods. In molecular epidemiology, we focus on molecular epidemiological studies of lifestyle-related diseases and elucidating the causes of developmental disorders.

Both fields accept laboratory visits at any time. Please contact us in advance to arrange a visit.
